What no one is telling you about feeding your dog bones

Do you know the cartoons where there’s a dog happily chewing away on a bone outside his kennel, and when he’s tired of it he buries it in the garden only to dig it up five minutes later? Well, it may be common in cartoons but it’s not often these days that you see pet parents feeding their dogs bones as more people become aware of the risks involved. My vet’s opinion is no to bones, the FDA’s opinion is also no, but there are some people who take a holistic approach and believe that certain types of bones are safe and can benefit your dog. Chewing on certain bones can help to clean your dog’s teeth and can provide some essential minerals to their diet such as calcium and phosphorous. The question is do the benefits outweigh the problems that feeding bones can cause? Check out this image for a few of the health risks of giving dogs bones.

Health risks of giving dogs bones

Feeding your dog bones

If you just can’t bring yourself to deny your precious pooch their favourite pass time, there are ways to drastically reduce the risks. The holistic approach of following the raw diet has excellent guidelines on how to correctly feed bones to your dog. Ensure that you follow the guidelines which detail how and which bones to feed because feeding them incorrectly could have you end up at the vet with a very sick dog and a costly vet bill. It is always best to consult with your Vet to get the best advise.

Alternatives to giving dogs bones.

If you prefer to stay on the safe side, there are some great alternatives for you to give your fur kid like chew toys and high quality, natural and unprocessed edible dental chews. Your dog will have the same joy of chewing and playing while their teeth get clean.
