Am I a cat or a dog person? Answer these 5 questions to find out

Am I a cat or a dog person?

So you know you want to lavish your love and affection on a furry friend, but you’re not sure whether it should be a fluffy feline or an adorable pooch. Or maybe you’re just tired of not having an answer to that eternal dinner-party question: ‘are you a cat or a dog person?’ (wait, you don’t get asked that at every party you go to? Just us?!).

Either way, here are a few fun questions you can answer to re-meow-ve any uncertainty and help lead you to a definitive answer, once and for all. (Note that these questions have absolutely no scientific basis and are only for fun! That said, you may just find out something interesting about yourself and your ideal pet…)

5 questions to determine whether you’re a moggy or a doggy person

  1. Do you like the great outdoors?

If you answered with a resounding ‘YES!’ or barked really loudly, give yourself one point for ‘dog’ person. As a dog owner, it’s important to take your hound on loads of fun adventures, including daily walks. So if you’d rather stay home with a good book, it’s definitely a point in favour of being a cat person!

  2. Do you like getting lots of love and enthusiastic affection

While not all dogs or all cats are the same, in most cases, dogs are super eager in their affection towards their owners. Do you love coming home to slobbery kisses and shrieks of excitement? Then you’re either a dog person or a toddler person. If you prefer to keep your love more low-key, there’s a good chance you’re more of a cat person. They aren’t called ‘cool cats’ for nothing! (okay, okay – cats are pretty cool!).

  3. Do you enjoy constant companionship or do you prefer your independence?

If you’re the kind of person who needs company while you’re brushing your teeth, you best put another point next to ‘dog’ person. A dog who’s well loved is likely to become your shadow, so if you like to have company no matter what you’re up to, you’re most likely more of a pooch person. And the flip side? Well, if you’re the kind of human who gets annoyed by their own shadow, you’re probably more of a cat person. (Some) cats are more subtle in their affection than dogs are, and may appreciate you from afar… just as you like it!

    1. In the kitchen, chatting up a storm with the host
    2. In the living room, sharing an entertaining story with the group
    3. Outside at the braai, laughing with mates
    4. Perched in a tree, glowering at guests and wishing they’d leave

If you answered 1, 2 or 3, you’re more than likely a dog person. Dog people (can) tend to be more sociable, just like dogs themselves. So, if you love being the life and soul of the party, put another point next to ‘dog’ person. But if your idea of a perfect party is a party of one, that’s definitely a point for ‘cat’ person!

  5. What’s your favourite thing to do in your free time? (choose as many as you like)
    1. Read a book
    2. Watch the latest Netflix series
    3. Nap, preferably in a sunny spot
    4. Sit in front of the TV without actually watching anything but preventing anyone else from seeing the screen
    5. Go hunting
    6. Go hiking
    7. Hang out with your friends
    8. Go for a long walk
    9. Sniff bums
    10. vChase your tail

For every answer that you ticked between 1 and 5, give yourself a point for ‘cat’ person, and for every answer that you ticked between 6 and 10, give yourself a point for ‘dog’ person. And if you ticked ‘go hunting’, we’re really not happy about that – unless you are, in fact, actually a cat (cats seem to like the Internet so we’re not discounting the possibility).

Now add up your points to see whether you’re a cat or a dog person. See? This totally scientific test has got you purr-fectly figured out!
