 Pros of owning a pet

Saving a life by adopting your pet

This is a major positive aspect when it comes to owning a pet. If you decide to adopt you will be giving so many unwanted dogs and cats a loving home. Usually pets that come from a shelter are tamed and well trained. Many owners who have adopted a pet speak about how their animals loyalty as well as their unbelievable amount of joy for being adopted. Adoption not only gives these pooches and furbabies a forever home but helps free space in overcrowded shelters.

Manage Stress

Your pets can be a major source of comfort in your life. Nothing beats getting greeted by a low purr or a wagging tail! Not only do they provide comfort but so many pets are a source of support for their owners. Pets are great listers, they don’t judge! Well, even if our pets could talk that would be the last thing they would do. Being the best companion they can be, they help many fight depression and loneliness. Pet parents go through their own personal journey of self growth as many people have expressed that their pets have taught them to be more compassionate and empathetic.

Health benefits

Pets provide a positive impact on your health. Aside from the benefits listed above, people who own pets, especially dog owners, tend to be more active. As a dog parent you need to make sure your dog is healthy physically and mentally, this entails taking them for a walk for at least 20 minute every day. The amount of time you spend walking your dog will depend on the breed, so make sure you know the health requirements of yours. Not only will your dog be feeling a lot happier after his walk but you will also have gotten your daily dose of exercise. Pets can also provide health benefits for children! Exposing your kids to dogs and cats at a very young age is a good way to strengthen their immune system and can also minimise their stress levels.

Responsibility

As mentioned above owning a pet is a big commitment, so before getting a pet make sure that is truly something you are ready for. Taking care of a pet, much like having a child, requires some lifestyle adjustments as you need to make sure your pets are cared for and not left home alone for too long. It teaches you to be more responsible as you are now caring for another living being who needs to be bathed, fed, loved, comforted and much more. Dogs and cats also require stimulation and can suffer from boredom so make sure you have spared enough time in your busy schedule to spend with them.

 Unconditional love

You know your pets will love you no matter what. This increased level of happiness and love is all you need to calm you down after a long and stressful day. Nothing compares to the amount of love you feel for them  and they feel for you. They have magical powers of turning every day into a good one!

 Great Way To Meet People

Owning a pet can be a great way to meet new people. If you own a dog a great way to meet other dog lovers is to take them for walks!  There are many online groups based on breeds and location which are a great way to meet other pet parents and share some tips on how to deal with some of your pets health requirements.

Cons of owning a pet

Allergies

It is common for pets to cause allergies in humans. Their saliva, urine and dander carries proteins that can cause irritation in people. If you or your family suffers from allergies it is probably not the best idea to get a furry animal, consider animals such as turtles or fish. If you suffer from allergies and would still like to own a dog or a cat make sure you are taking the necessary precautions to prevent any health risks.

Financial Commitment

One important factor to consider is the financial commitment of owning a pet. Often pets cruise through life only costing you the price of their food, their dewormers and their annual check-ups. However chronic medication, emergency trips to the vet, toys and grooming, beds and appropriate shelter add to your annual costs. Consider investing in pet insurance to avoid getting hit with expensive vet bills. So, before getting a pet make sure you keep those expenses in mind.

 Messy

The level of mess in your house will depend on the animal you choose. Unfortunately owning a pet comes with the dreaded clean up. You are constantly cleaning as you need to pick up their toys, wash their beds, clean your floors, wash their blankets, tidy the house, pick up their poop, and much more. This is probably the least favorite aspect for every pet parent, but this is something that can also be controlled with appropriate training.
